Top ten tips for looking after your money

We asked our young advisers to give us their top ten tips for making sure they look after their money, and this is what they told us:

  1. If you are going to spend some money, make sure you recognise what each coin and note looks like, and remember exactly how much you are carrying.
  2. When you’re carrying money away from home make sure you keep it safe and hidden from sight so you don’t lose it. You might want to think about getting a wallet or a purse to look after it.
  3. Always make sure you count your change carefully in a shop. If you think it’s wrong ask the shopkeeper to check.
  4. If there’s something big that you want to buy, ask yourself: do I really need it? If the answer is no, then think again about spending your money.
  5. If the answer is yes, make sure that you look around different shops and on the internet for the best price.
  6. Try to save your money when you can in a money box or a bank account.
  7. As the old saying goes – out of sight, out of mind – when saving your money at home hide your money from sight that way you won’t see it to spend it!
  8. When trying to save up for something ask your mum or dad (or guardian) to help you save your money so you’re not tempted to spend it.
  9. If you are trying to save up, write down a list of everything you buy. That way you can see if there are things you don’t need.
  10. Make sure you don’t spend all your money on small things like sweets or you might find you have nothing left for the big things!
