St Godric's Primary School took part in lots of activities during their My Money Week. A poet went into school to help the children create poems about money and a Junior Apprentice project was held where pupils in Years 4 and 5 marketed and sold a range of products to the rest of the school!

About the competitions

In the run-up to My Money Week 2010, we set primary and secondary pupils the task of taking part in two amazing national art and PSHE education-based competitions for schools across England:

The competitions aimed to get pupils engaged in personal finance education in a new, wholly original and exciting way: by combining their knowledge of personal finance with their opinions on the value and importance of money. They then produced a piece of artwork to represent their knowledge and opinions.

The competitions were supported by specially-created lesson plans, which are still available to download and use!

There are two lesson plans for primary and two for secondary, each containing full and detailed curriculum links:

  • For primary: focuses on PSHE education (preparing to play an active role as citizens) and art (exploring and developing ideas; investigating and making art, craft and design), with cross-curricular links in history and geography.
  • For secondary: links to art and design (Key Stage 3 and GCSE, focusing on exploring, creating, understanding and evaluating) and PSHE education (Key Stage 3 and 4, financial capability and economic understanding).

Trying it out in your school

“I found the resources that were available for use in the build up to 'My Money' competition really useful. They were relevant and stimulating and led to some powerful thought provoking discussions and work from our Pupils.” Nutan Modi,
Teacher, Sathya Sai School

If you want to try out the task in your school, we recommend you make use of the two lesson plans that accompanied the competitions, but it is up to you whether to dedicate homework or other time to it.

Other personal finance education learning materials available in the resources and activities section of the My Money website can be used as complementary lessons to the competitions, if desired.
