Winners' day
My Money Week Competition 2010
Saturday 3rd July
At the end of My Money Week 2010, we invited the regional winners of our national competition down to London to celebrate and showcase their winning designs. Travelling with their teachers and their families, the winners were booked into a swanky hotel in central London to get a good night’s sleep before a day of special activities.
Their day began with a trip to the Bank of England. They had a guided tour of the impressive rooms, and a sneaky peek at the Governors’ office, which is only open to the public a few days each year. This was followed by a cinematic presentation on the security features of bank notes, which highlighted how difficult it would be to reproduce notes in your bedroom! The winners were then invited to have a stroll around the Bank of England’s Museum to learn about the history of the Bank and have the opportunity to hold a real gold bar!
The winners then moved on to Blackall Studios, an art gallery in the City of London, where they found an exhibition of all their winning designs, alongside the Highly Commended artworks. After a well-earned lunch the winners were presented with their prizes by Wendy van den Hende, Chief Executive of pfeg.
The regional winners for the primary competition all received a goody bag including a Nintendo DSi, an art book and a cheque for £1,000 for their school. In addition to this, the overall winner of the primary competition, Sophie Doa, from St Marys CE Primary School in Southend, was presented with a coin with her design on it, as well as a big bag of goodies from the Royal Mint.
The regional winners of the secondary competition received a bag packed with an iPod Touch, a £50 art shop voucher, a cheque for £1,000 for their school and a visit from a local artist to their school. As well as all this, the overall winner, Imogen Lea from Nottingham Girls High School, was presented with a digital camera.
Following the exhibition, and some quick siteseeing, the winners and their guests were treated to an after-hours tour of the British Museum. Here they were free to roam the crowd-free coin galleries, guided by some very knowledgeable British Museum staff. They were also given the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the museum’s Egyptian Mummies!
“I was highly impressed by the passion with which people celebrated their local regions, and by the careful, creative, and in many cases, deeply profound ways in which money was represented. The work of the pfeg is essential to the wellbeing and growth of our society, and I’m proud that we could participate in this exercise.”
Matthew Bonaccorsi,
The Royal Mint.
Our thanks go to all those that took part in the competition this year: to the winners, their teachers and guests who made the exhibition such a success; and the British Museum, the Bank of England and the Royal Mint for organising tours and prizes for the winners, making it such a memorable day.
To see the winners’ work and some of the other brilliant entries we received go to the My Money national competition gallery.
