Long Eaton Secondary School in Nottinghamshire are taking part in a Britain's Got Functional Skills event to increase their financial capability as well as developing their functional and communication skills.

2040 Vision: What will money look like in the future?

The My Money competition challenge is very simple and open-ended: for both key stage 3, 4 and 5 pupils to show what they think money will look like in years to come. To enter, pupils must produce a piece of 2D or 3D artwork, using any medium preferred.

How does the competition fit into My Money Week?

The competition has been designed to work hand in hand with the many other My Money Week activities and in the free My Money Week activity pack. It is suggested that teachers begin by using some of the resources provided on this site to introduce the theme and get pupils thinking about money and how they might use it as they grow up. This will help pupils work towards producing a competition entry.

Teachers can choose from the very wide range of curriculum-linked personal finance activities and lessons using the navigation links above, and select learning materials which match the needs of their classes. These include:

A learning programme for My Money Week can be created from these resources, possibly including homework activities, which can culminate in pupils making a competition entry after working through the competition lesson plan for their age group.

Running the competition as a whole school activity

Schools may wish to use the competition with the whole school as part of My Money Week. This could start with a staff meeting to discuss which aspects of My Money Week the school wants to follow and which resources might be used to introduce the My Money, My Future theme.

An assembly could be planned where the competition is introduced using the video and the prizes described. This would be an excellent opportunity to inspire pupils and get them thinking of ideas from the start.

Discussions will need to take place about suitable art media to ensure that the school has sufficient materials to go around and that the school produces a wide range of entries to make an interesting display.

A competition coordinator could be established to manage entries and ensure that everyone is kept informed of the timetable and activities, and to ensure that art materials are available in advance.
